You Are Who You Scroll With: Reclaiming Your Algorithm Before It Reclaims You

(So maybe stop letting the algorithm babysit your future self.)
You’ve probably heard it before.
“You become the person you surround yourself with.”
Our parents said it. That one cousin posted it in their bio. And deep down, it kinda hits. But here’s the thing — in 2025, “who you surround yourself with” = your algorithm.

We spend more time with our feeds than with our friends.
Our phone knows our moods better than we do.
And our digital world? It’s shaping us, for better or worse.
Your algorithm is your new inner circle.
It watches you. Learns from you. Mirrors you.
But not the real you - the impulsive you.
The bored-at-1am-you. The doomscrolling-on-a-break-you. It doesn’t care about who you want to be. It feeds off who you are in your messiest, mid-scroll moments. You pause on a breakup reel? Boom, heartbreak TikTok. You watch one “that’s why you’re still single” post. Enjoy your new personality. You click on a productivity hack? Suddenly you’re a 5AM club disciple. For 3 days. Then it’s back to chaotic-neutral. Algorithms don’t have morals or mindfulness. They just have data. And you’re the one giving it to them.
So… what do we do with this?
Honestly?
We treat our feed like our future best friend.
Or our therapist.
Or our life coach.
Because whether we like it or not, it’s talking to us 24/7.
Here’s how I started making my feed work for me, not against me:
1. Curate with intention, not just instinct.
Follow people who post what you actually want to grow into, not just what’s viral or hot or relatable right now.
2. Save posts that feel like soul food.
Treat your saved folder like a vision board. If it doesn’t inspire, ground, or challenge you, let it go.
3. Unfollow to protect your peace.
Yes, even if their dog is cute. Even if they’re a mutual. Even if you lowkey wish you had their life. Unfollow. Mute. Clean it out like your closet before a glow-up.
4. Linger longer on the good stuff.
Algorithms notice what you pause on. So when you come across something meaningful?Pause. Breathe. Let the algorithm see you heal.
5. Detox without being dramatic.
No need for a 30-day-no-screen fast if that’s not your vibe. But maybe one day a week where you don’t scroll to feel something. Just… be.
The real flex? A feed that fuels your future.
You don’t need to quit social. You just need to stop letting it raise you. Because you're not just scrolling, you're shaping your mindset, your mood, your habits.
So next time you open your app, ask yourself:
Is this who I want to become? Or just how I feel today?
Because the internet’s watching.
And honestly, you deserve better than algorithmic autopilot.
Byeeeeeee....
